Etsy Lines ’em Up & Knocks ’em Down

AcquisitionsEtsy is set to acquire Elo7, a privately held marketplace for unique, handmade items, ranked as a top 10 ecommerce site in Brazil. Following the recent acquisition of Depop for $1.625 billion, Etsy will acquire Elo7 for $217 million in cash.

Heating up: Small businesses continue to pivot to online marketplaces. Shopify and Amazon react in a race to bring more developers and future innovation to their platforms.

In other news: If you use Venmo for your side hustle it’ll soon cost more money out of your pocket. The new “goods and services” tag means more fees for small businesses like yours.

Facebook Reports on the Consumer Habits of Real Humans, Totally Not Robots

Facebook IQ released a new report detailing the changes in consumer habits since the start of COVID-19.

“Across the world, 81% of consumers say they’ve changed a shopping habit since the start of the pandemic, and 92% say they will continue this new behavior in the long-term.”

Facebook takes a deep dive into ecommerce with industry experts like Ankit Mehta from Accenture and Rachel Tipograph, founder and CEO of Mikmak. Here’s what they have to say at a glance:

Consumer’s desire for control expands beyond the relationship with the brand and has evolved into empowerment of choice. Brands should build consumer-centric relationships focused on the causes, ideas, and creators that are most meaningful to their audiences.

During the pandemic, 45% of people say that they shopped more with their smartphone. Currently, 66% of global online shoppers say their mobile device is quickly becoming their most important shopping tool.

62% of social media users say they’d like to communicate with a customer service representative through a messaging app.

Some 69% of global online shoppers feel more personally connected to brands that offer personalized content or deals, and 60% are interested in using a personalized shopping tab to discover tailored content.

51% of consumers surveyed get ideas on which products to shop for from celebrities and creators, and 45% of online shoppers globally say they want to buy products promoted by creators directly on social media.

Navigating Etsy’s Stormy Seas

Like the moon changes the tides, Etsy is a platform that experiences new phases over time. And without a strong understanding of Etsy’s foundation, you’ll be sitting in water like a ship without a sail. Ready to take the wheel?

Pinterest’s Take? Take it Slow.

Faster isn’t always better. At least that’s the point Pinterest makes in a recent shopping study for fashion and beauty. They compare weekly Pinners to people on other platforms, and say that when people take at least a week to shop for something, they spend about 50% more $$$. But, what does this mean? The joy of shopping hasn’t gone away just because shopping is moving primarily online.

Slow ride, take it easy. While it’s true, you should always be closing, your buyers may not always be ready to make that purchase in your shop. Jim Habig from Pinterest says “shoppers miss browsing. They miss taking their time in stores: considering, looking, enjoying.” But how can you help your buyers enjoy the process of browsing on Etsy?

1. Your shop is an extension of your brand and buyers should be immersed in that sweet aesthetic. Browsing through Etsy listings can be fun when your product photos and items descriptions tell a story of who and what your shop stands for.

2. Product photos should first and foremost show your product in all its glory. But they should also show how people can enjoy your product. Don’t underestimate the importance of lifestyle photos that tell a story of how your products can be used in the real world.

3. Using social media to market your shop can help create a living and breathing life around your products. The last thing your products want to do is sit there on a shelf. In an upcoming Jam, we’ll be going into more detail about this, so stay tuned.

At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of shoppers don’t know what they want when they make their first or even second search on Etsy. This is clear in our current blog series about the most popular Etsy keywords. So as they’re taking their time browsing each Etsy shop for an item they have in mind, what’s going to keep them focused on the listings in your shop?
