How to Change Your Etsy Shop Name & Update Your Seller Account

If you’re new to selling on Etsy or if you’re ready to rebrand your business, you might decide it’s time to change your Etsy shop name. If your first shop name didn’t strike lightning in a bottle, maybe your second one will. Or your third. Either way, here’s how to update your seller account.

Before most Etsy sellers land on a brand worthy of creating an empire, they experiment with different iterations. That’s because it can take a while to flesh out your brand until it’s something you’re completely satisfied with.

Or worse, you may need to change your name due to certain copyright infringements

Luckily, Etsy makes it pretty straightforward to change your Etsy shop name. This article will show you how to do that and update a few other settings and preferences in your seller account.

To change your shop name:

  1. Login to your Etsy account, then click on Shop Manager.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Info & Appearance.
  4. Next to your shop name click Change
  5. Enter your new shop name.
  6. Click Save.

It’s as simple as that.

What happens after you change your Etsy shop name?

Once you change your Etsy shop name, your Etsy shop will have a new URL. But don’t worry, all of your old links will still continue to work. After your name change, Etsy uses 301 redirects to help maintain your search engine rankings in Google.

Another perk is that no other Etsy seller will be able to use your old Etsy shop name. So you don’t have to worry about your shop links ever redirecting to somebody else’s Etsy shop. Still, it’s best practice to clean up your old links, wherever you have them posted, and begin using your new URL.

For 45 days, a little icon will appear next to your Etsy shop name letting shoppers know of your name change. And shoppers who bought from you under your previous name will always see your previous and current shop name on their receipts and transaction pages.

That way there’s no confusion about who your regulars are purchasing from.

Updating your Username, Shop Names & Full Names

Etsy has several different names for different naming situations. Namely, anywhere you can name a name. It can get confusing.

So let’s help you out:

Username

Your username is the name you use to sign up for Etsy when you initially create an account. You log in to Etsy using your username (or email) and password.

You cannot change your username, and this information is public. It’s also the name associated with your buyer account. So anytime you leave a review on somebody else’s Etsy listing, your username will be displayed, not your Etsy shop name.

Your username is also used in the URL for your Etsy profile, which looks like this:

http://www.etsy.com/people/SallyBurns/

And anyone who visits this page can see your favorite items, shops, followers, and who you’re following.

Shop name

This is the name of your shop that people visit to buy your products. It’s this name that you’re able to change. Etsy Shop names are in addition to your username. If your shop name is different from your username, you can’t use it to sign in.

The URL of your Etsy shop looks like this:

https://www.etsy.com/shop/examplename/

Full name

Your full name is optional but represents you as a person. This makes it easier for friends, family, and fans to find you on Etsy. It can’t be a business name, but it can be a nickname, initials, or something similar.

If you use your full name on Etsy, in most instances it will take the place of your username.

It can be changed at any time:

  • Login to your Etsy account, then click on Your Account.
  • Click on View Your Profile.
  • Find the little pencil next to your Username, then click it.
  • Here on your Public Profile, you can enter your first and last name.
  • Click Save Changes.

Frequently asked questions about Etsy shop name changes

I am the copyright holder for my name, but the name isn’t available.

If you hold the IP rights to your name but see that the shop name is already taken, first try contacting the seller that has that shop name. By simply communicating with the seller you may be able to resolve the dispute amicably.

If that doesn’t work, make sure your IP is registered under Etsy’s Reporting Portal, then make a claim for your original IP.

I closed my old shop. Can I reopen it and keep that name?

Yes, you can. Once a name has been used on Etsy to open a shop, it cannot be used by anyone else, so it will always belong to you.

I need to change my shop name again.

You can change your shop name as often as you like before it is open.

However, once your shop name is open, you can only change your name up to a maximum of five times in the ‘Info & Appearance’ tab. You can change it again after the fifth time, but you need to contact Etsy support to do so.

Your Etsy Payment goes from your Etsy seller account to a selected bank account according to your deposit schedule.

To update your bank account, you first must ensure that your bank account details match the name of the business entity that you’ve entered in your ‘Legal and tax’ information page.

Once these details have changed, your funds will be held for five days to protect your account from fraud and misuse.

Bank account verification

A small deposit of less than a dollar should appear in your bank account within a week. This lets you know that the deposits are working correctly and don’t have to be repaid.

You won’t get this deposit until you make your shop live if you’re opening a new account.
