Marmalead’s New Etsy Listing Grades

Want to see Marmalead’s updated listing grades in action? One of our beta testers, Kara Buntin, explains why this new grading system is much more effective for Etsy sellers.

We’re not saying you should trust her opinion just because she loves Marmalead. We’re saying you should trust her because she has over 50,000 sales on Etsy!

Despite Etsy not officially updating its SEO guidelines for years, our listing grade update responds to observable shifts in search behaviors on the platform. This ensures the grading system accurately reflects current search criteria rather than outdated guidelines.

Kara’s a big proponent of using actual data to make informed SEO decisions, which is something we take pride in at Marmalead. By applying SEO strategies through observed data, Etsy sellers can improve their results when it comes to appearing in search.

How Marmalead’s Etsy Listing Grades Work

Marmalead’s updated grading system transforms how Etsy SEO is approached by incorporating a detailed analysis of SEO factors that align with the latest search trends on Etsy.

The new grading system assesses Etsy listings based on four SEO factors:

  • Number of Tags: Tags help Etsy search understand your listings. Use all 13 because it’s silly not to.
  • Unique Keywords: Try to ensure that each word in your title and tags is unique. This metric emphasizes the importance of using various keywords in titles and tags to avoid repetition and boost visibility.
  • Correct Spelling: Make sure your tags and titles are spelled correctly to attract the most shoppers. Etsy corrects shopper spelling, so there is no need to include misspelled keywords on purpose. Ensuring tags and titles are error-free enhances search visibility.
  • Unique Tags: Minimize the number of keywords you repeat to make room for unique keywords. Repeating words like ‘silver’ (e.g., ‘silver necklace’ and ‘silver jewelry’) has little benefit. Use unique tags for broader search matching without repeating keywords.

Introducing Bonus Grades

While not factored into your overall listing grades, bonus grades are equally important in appearing in search results.

Bonus grades help Etsy sellers fine-tune their SEO strategies by providing clear feedback on how narrowly or broadly their listings are positioned in the market.

By understanding and adjusting your ‘Tight Net’ and ‘Wide Net’ scores, sellers can strategically enhance their listings to better match specific and general search terms. Effectively using the new grading metric can maximize your visibility and potential customer reach on Etsy.

‘Bonus Grades’ assess Etsy listings based on relevancy and reach:

Relevancy: Tight Keyword Net

This evaluates how closely specific search phrases match the words in a listing, indicating a focused SEO strategy.

  • Tight Keyword Net: Measures how many unique keywords are targeted specifically in your listing. Increasing the number of unique keywords can help you effectively target more potential shoppers.
  • Tight Net Searches: This Indicates the average monthly searches generated by the keywords within your tight keyword net. Utilizing more unique or highly searched keywords can boost this figure.
  • Tight Net Visits: Reflects the average monthly visits generated by your tight net keywords, typically twice the number of searches, emphasizing the importance of selecting high-quality keywords for better targeting.

Reach: Wide Keyword Net

Assesses the range of potential search phrases, including any words from the listing, expanding reach.

  • Wide Keyword Net: Represents the broader range of keywords that your listing targets. Expanding this net with more unique keywords can help you reach a wider audience.
  • Wide Net Searches: Shows the average monthly searches for the keywords in your wide net. Increasing the diversity of search volume of your keywords can enhance this metric.
  • Wide Net Visits: This metric counts the average monthly visits from the wide net keywords, with visits usually doubling the searches, highlighting the effectiveness of using strategic keywords to attract more visitors.

These bonus grades assist Etsy sellers in refining their SEO strategies by offering clear feedback on how specifically or broadly their listings are positioned in the market. By comprehending and adjusting their ‘Tight Net’ and ‘Wide Net’ scores, sellers can strategically optimize their listings to align better with particular and general search terms, maximizing visibility and potential customer engagement on Etsy.

5 Steps to Using Marmalead’s New Etsy Listing Grades

#1. Get Familiar with Grading Metrics

Before you start making major changes to your listings, familiarize yourself with the new grading system and updated SEO factors.

Start by taking a closer look at each feature in the new grading system. Ensure you fully understand the metrics in your ‘Tight Net’ and ‘Wide Net’ grades.

Understand that unique keywords and tags are critical to limit redundancy and broaden your reach.

#2. Review Your Current Listings

Use Marmalead’s updated grading tool to review your existing listings. Start with your lowest listing grades and see what areas need improvement.

If you’re not using all 13 tags, start doing that right away.

If you have trouble brainstorming unique keywords, visit Marmalead’s Storm Tool or use the Boost SEO feature to see what keyword suggestions Marmalead comes up with.

#3. Implement Incremental Changes

Start by taking baby steps to improve your listings, such as adding more unique tags to listings with open tag slots.

Pay attention to your keyword net to see how relevant your keywords are for your listings.

Remember, a Tight Net approach means using highly relevant keywords that could result in appearing in fewer search results.

A Wide Net approach means your keywords are slightly less relevant to your product but can broaden your reach to more search results.

By finding a balance between relevancy and reach, you can broaden your search results with your target audience.

And whatever you do, don’t change everything all at once.

#4. Boost Your SEO

Activate the Boost SEO feature to automatically enhance your listings. This tool analyzes your current keywords and tags and suggests optimized alternatives that strike a balance between unique, highly relevant keywords and broad matches for increased exposure in search results.

Experiment with this feature to find new keyword suggestions to improve your listing’s visibility and search relevance.

#5. Monitor Performance

Check the performance of your updated listings regularly. While changes to Etsy’s search results aren’t instant, you should watch for improvements.

Cross-reference your new keywords with Etsy’s search tool to identify seasonality changes and spikes in interest or popularity.

If you notice promising keyword alternatives while doing your research, implement those into your listings and repeat the above process to ensure your listings balance optimal search performance and relevance.

By systematically following these steps, sellers can effectively adapt to the new grading system and ensure their listings are better optimized for Etsy SEO.
